B.G. Burkett: Navy Commanders to Cast Doubt on Kerry's War Record

Several Navy officers who supervised Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry when he commanded a swift boat in Vietnam are preparing to publicly question his war record - including the circumstances under which he was awarded three Purple Hearts - a noted Vietnam War historian revealed on Sunday.

Burkett, whose 1999 book, "Stolen Valor," is considered to be the definitive history of of falsified Vietnam War claims, told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg that Kerry's former commanders would allege that the top Democrat's Purple Hearts were awarded for "self-reported injuries that were virtually nonexistent."

"He never got a day of treatment, he never spent a day in a medical facility," Burkett said. "These were all self-reported wounds, which you're going to hear from some swift boat guys in the future as to the nature of those wounds."

Burkett said he had personally spoken to the Navy commanders who were preparing to go public about Kerry's decorations.

"You're going to get quite a showing [of those speaking out]," Burkett told Malzberg. "I don't know [the number] yet. They're trying to get it to be unanimous of every swift boat guy who ever served."

As to the timetable for the upcoming revelations, Burkett said that Kerry's superior officers "were still discussing that."

"You've got some major rallys being planned against John Kerry by Vietnam veterans on the mall, at the convention - this type of thing," he said. "And we're going to make America aware of John Kerry's military record

This is not good news for Bush. Any kind of comparison of military records will not be favorable to Bush. He'd rather it just be tossed off to the side and forgotten. Precisely how injured Kerry was is pretty petty stuff. We know that he saved a guy's life -- a Republican no less who seems to be supporting Kerry now.

D2bets,

Your spinning it like a good liberal would and I applaud that, but there is just one major problem, your wrong. Phony purple hearts do not bode well with anyone.

He himself said on one of his Purple Heart awards, it wasn't much and he was walking shortly thereafter.

You don't put yourself in for a Purple Heart. Your commander recommends it for you.

So you think he bribed his commanders? Or maybe they knew he would run for President someday and so they wanted to embellish his record?

Eventhough the possibility of the Purple hearts award may be in fact bogus. It is still a known fact that he has properly served his time of duty in the services abroad.

Don't like either prick but Bush is spineless POS. There's no comparison and the RePUBICans should drop this issue.

Like I said, this is not a good issue for Bush. Any time it comes up Kerry can simply trot out what's his na,e the guy whose life he dramataically saved. Or is he lying too? Nobody is going to care whether Kerry was seriously injured or healed quickly or was slightly injured but didn't feel it or whatever the fvck. This is a non-starter for Shrub and I'm pretty sure he knows it.

In spite of my previous post, I am not very crazy about Kerry and still prefer Bush.

The book that was referred to deals w/ wannebe's who claimed to have served in RVN when it became somewhat fashionable to be a Nam vet. They included politicians, celebs, sports figures et al.

I was in the Navy infantry (USMC) and served 2 tours, both in intense combat. Our policy was that a Marine had to be hospitalized to receive a Heart. I can also see a scenario where a Commanding Officer would( I sound like Sean Goebbel's Hannity defending Junior) refuse evacuation to stay with his men which happened a lot. A corpsmen would be initially responsible for the writing up of a Purple Heart citation. I have 2 w/ dates, times, engagements, type of wounds etc.. The paper trail would be easy to follow.

I also think that it is very hypocritical for anyone who never served in that hell hole to question a man's service when they haven't a clue what happened then or at any point during the war. This is tantamount to being a quasi-wannebe as you talk about something that you could NEVER understand! Kerry didn't hide in the "Chamagne Squadron" where he would never come into harm's way. The Nazi's will have to come up w' many character assassination ploys to dig their way out of the hole that they have dug w/ the war, 9/11 and the economy!

I served my time.

I'll question his worthiness, since your primary criteria seems to be that people who have served in the military are the only ones who have a voice.

And if the Republicans are Nazis, then the Democrats are Marxists, and you should go live in a different country, because you have no actual freedom either way. Your service in the military compared to your incessant driven propaganda is ridiculous, though it is certainly consistent.
